Soft tissue injuries are very problematic if not treated carefully. As we discussed last time, soft issue injuries can be completely healed if seen swiftly after the event. Read further today for part two of this series.
Soft tissue basics:
As a quick recap, soft tissue injuries are those that injure the skin, muscles, or ligaments. They are not injuries which affect bones. An injuries to a bone is referred to as a hard tissue injury.
There are many ways a person can experience a soft tissue injury. However, the treatment people receive can drastically affect the functionality. Just about every person experiences a soft tissue injury in their lifetime.
As mentioned in the last blog, there are two types of soft tissue injury. Acute trauma and overuse are two sorts of soft tissue injury, but ProCare focuses on car accident caused acute trauma. Overuse is a result of respective actions and is not ever a result of a car accident although a car accident may bring it to your attention.

Signs of acute traumatic soft tissue injuries:
Open wounds are the easiest injuries to identify. This is for obvious reasons. Lacerations have jagged and uneven edges. The wound is open to the layers of soft tissue below the surface of the epidermis, the top layer of the skin.
Abrasions are more like burns as they only affect the layers of the skin. First degree only affects the epidermis which makes it the easiest abrasion to spot. Second degree affects the epidermis and also the dermis.
Third degree, you guessed it, affects all three layers of the skin. You may hear to an abrasion as a friction burn. Contusions stand out with little difficulty because of their discoloration called bruising. They are often swollen as well.
Sprains affect joints such as ankles, wrists, shoulders, and elbows. Most sprains look like contusions due to the discoloration and swelling. So, sprains vary from contusions because they are not results of direct force trauma.
Instead, a sprain is a result of leverage trauma incident caused by an acute over-stress of the connective tissues of the joint. Twisting and rolling ankles are the most common ways people suffer from sprains.
Signs of overuse soft tissue injuries:
There are plenty examples of overuse injuries. Many of these examples are irritations related to tendonitis, bursitis, epicondylitis, muscle strains, or muscle tears. Tennis elbow is the perfect example of a common overuse injury.
Because overuse injuries can happen just about anywhere on the body, it is easier to go over the symptoms of many overuse injuries. Look out for pain and the location of the pain. A limited range of motion is a sign of an overuse injury.
Popping or snapping sounds, or feelings, are signs of overuse injuries. In addition to being signs of acute traumatic soft tissue injuries, swelling and bruising can be signs of overuse injuries too. Due to the nature of overuse injures, physical therapy and medical attention is very crucial.
It is extremely detrimental to one’s health to seek immediate medical attention if any signs mentioned above sound familiar. This is especially true for overuse injuries because as time goes on and the injuries are worsened, the likelihood original range of motion of returning becomes slim.
