Once people get their referrals to physical therapy, the unknown can be scary. However, after stepping foot in our Oviedo office, new patients always feel comfortable. With today’s blog, we would like to give you a heads up for what to except at your first PT appointment.
What happens on the first day:
Luckily, you are off to a good start by making an appointment with ProCare Health & Rehab Centers. Our physicians and employees would be glad to give your an overview of what to except during physical therapy. But today should be enough to make you feel prepared and at ease for your first day.
First off, you are not training for the Olympics most likely. Do not put pressure or too many expectations from your body on its first day of its healing journey. Physical therapy is meant to increase functional mobility for people with an illness or injury.
A physical therapist may ask a patient to do an exercise which does not feel amazing. But in the end, you can trust our physicians will not ask you to do an exercise you are not comfortable with. Our team will ask how you are feeling during every visit, letting your body guide your journey and adjusting throughout each exercise.
The first session is referred to as an initial evaluation. During the initial evaluation, the physical therapist will spend time with you to thoroughly understand your condition, how it affects your life, and your previous level of function. The PT may take down extensive notes and measurements to properly document your ailments. This is the best way to track the start of your healing journey.
Many states in the United States allow direct access to a physical therapist. This means people can be seen by a physical therapist without first getting a referral from their primary care physician. Thus, saving money and precious time that could be used receiving important medical attention.
Studies indicate that being assessed by a physical therapy directly is safe and an effective way to get back to a patient’s normal activity level. After discussing your condition, the physical therapist will perform an examination. The physical therapist will take measurements of impairments that may be affected by the injury.
Common measurements that your physical therapist might take are palpitation, tests of strength, balance, neurological screening tests, range of motion tests, and functional mobility. While the examination is proceeding, the physical therapist will give you clear instructions about what to except and what you should do. After the exam has wrapped up, you will get started on your physical therapy treatment plan.
Beginning a treatment plan:
After discussing problems and a thorough examination, the physical therapist will have a clear idea of a treatment plan that suits your needs. The PT will usually want to begin immediately to decrease your pain and improve your mobility. At this point, your physical therapist should convey to you what their goals are for you and the expect course of your personalized rehab.
Besides using therapeutic modalities like ultrasound or electrical stimulation, exercise one of the main tools to help you move and feel better. Exercise should be a main staple in your rehab program, whatever intensity that may be. Most often, your PT will start with very gentle, simple moves.
After your initial consultation has ended, your physical therapist may give you well explained exercises for you to do at home. These exercises are referred to as a home exercise program, or HEP. As part of your plan of care, your physical therapist should give you an idea of how many times they would like to see you each week.
Depending on severity or your availability, a clinic may see a patient two to three times a week. Otherwise, you may only have to pop in once a week. Your personalized program will depend on many variables such as your pain level or your current level of mobility loss.
Have a good physical therapist, patient relationship:
Your relationship with the physical therapist should feel like a therapeutic alliance. You and your PT should work together towards your goals of moving and feeling better. Simply ask if you are unsure of the purpose of moves or what area it targets.
Physical therapists should always encourage patients to ask questions. A great PT will provide clear and understandable answers regarding your treatment, condition, and rehab program. Your physical therapist may give you suggestions on types of clothing and shoes to wear.
We hope this helps you better understand what your journey with a physical therapist will look like. If you still have questions, please do not hesitate to call and ask our Oviedo office. Make an appointment today, and we will be sure to make you excited about your healing!
