Spinal Decompression Therapy

Spinal Decompression Therapy

If you suffer from back pain or herniated discs, you might have heard about spinal decompression therapy. Do you know the general idea but have been left wondering, what is it? Who exactly can it help? Here is everything you need to know about spinal decompression.

What Is Spinal Decompression?

Spinal decompression therapy is a treatment option for damaged discs. Repetitive stress injuries, improper posture, and acute injury can cause your vertebrae to compress your discs. In turn, pressure placed on your discs pinches the spinal cord or nerves, causing pain and issues such as herniated discs.

Spinal Decompression Therapy is a non-surgical treatment to relieve the pain and other problems associated with spinal disc injuries. This treatment provides gentle decompression of the discs through the use of a special table. Using motorized traction, the table works by gently stretching the spine, giving relief to affected discs.

While you may feel relief after your first session, spinal decompression therapy is not a one-time treatment. Decompression therapy works in very minute increments, which over time allows the disc to retract back to its normal position. The number of sessions required will vary depending on the severity of the issue. Expect anywhere from 6 to 24 initial sessions.

Does it hurt?

Decompression therapy is gentle and should not hurt; it just feels like a stretch through the spine. Those with severe issues might experience some initial discomfort during sessions but not pain. If you are ever uncomfortable, the treatment can be paused, and your chiropractor will address any concerns.

Who Can Spinal Decompression Help?

Spinal decompression therapy can treat many disc-related problems. It can help those suffering from:

  • Herniated discs
  • Bulging discs
  • Back or neck pain
  • Sciatica (pain or tingling that runs down the leg from the lower back)
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Pinched nerves

These are just some of the ailments that can be treated using spinal decompression. This non-surgical treatment is an excellent option for addressing pain issues without the risk of surgery. Study results have shown spinal decompression improves disc height and is an effective treatment for reducing pain in the spine.

Not everyone is an ideal candidate for spinal decompression, such as those who have hardware in their spine or pregnant clients. A chiropractor will help you determine if spinal decompression is right for you. They may recommend that you would be better suited for chiropractic adjustments or physical therapy.

To determine how spinal decompression can best help you, make an appointment to meet with a chiropractor. X-rays will show your chiropractor the best course of action to treat the affected discs and help overall spinal health.
